HI I am new at this. My husband diagnosed on Dec 06 with base of tongue. IN Jan 07 had surgery for the base left side, also removed 1 tonsil same side and the lymph nodes. Follow up with only 33 treatments of radiation. No chemo recommnded. Stage 1. Anyway he lost his saliva, taste too, He only has a rotten taste all the time. He never had a feeding tube, only for 3 days in hospital. He drank boost for 1 yrs. could not tolerate food, but a Dr told him he had to beat or he would lose his swallowing ability. He always has the feeling something is stuck in his throat. He is checked every 3 mo. and there is nothing seen. He's been lucky with his followup scans. But he's not happy with his terrible taste. Has tried many things. We go to a support grp 1 month. Any new ideas for him would be appreciated.

Get him biotene mouth wash and tell him to rinse a few times a day, This is what Ido and it helps that lousy taste. Get the biotene at walmart. They have to different bottles of it. One cost $5.37 and the other $5.97. Either wil work for this taste problem and if he can, get him a soft tooth brush and Biotene toothpaste and tell him to brush his tongue and even around his cheeks and gums. It sure makes a world of differnece in your mouth. The tooth paste is about $5.37 too.
Thanks for your response. I have purchased so many different brands and oasis mouth spray is kept in stock here. Biotene is also part of his routine also. He still has the salagen pills too. We keep trying anything new. He also did acupuncture treatments, nothing.
