I was surprised to see a short segment on the local evening news today about the dangers of oral cancer. Very brief and they stated there were "half a million" new cases every year. Also that while tobacco was a causitive factor, sunshine was also a related factor - ???

I will e-mail them tomorrow with some more accurate facts, but still, it was the first time I have ever seen anything like that.

One small step.

I've seen a lot more news articles is the past few days, especially about the HPV links to OC.

This is so frustrating. I know Sturgis and met him at MDACC 5 years ago when I was there doing an interview for NBC. I spent quite a bit of time with him telling him about the HPV16 virus the work at JH and what we were seeing. While interested, he kinda blew me off with a "it isn't a proven situation as of yet" attitude. Others at the center were way more receptive to my alarm and here he is publishing a paper like this is something new. This is what OCF has been saying for years, has been previously published by our board member Maura Gillison at Johns Hopkins, and is nothing more than a "me too" paper. What next will they put out to get their requirement to publish or perish requirement, that young non smokers are the demographic? Sunshine is only a factor in lip cancers..... and they are a very small part of the total number of oral cancers.

Brian
I understand your frustration, given the history. It is a typically NIH reaction.... Not Invented Here smile (with appologies to the real NIH). On the other had you know the real genesis of this and since he now toots the same horn you might want to take advantage of that?
Sometimes a story needs to be told again an again...

Everyone that gets out the right information in as many venues as possible is helping to over all cause. That is the bottom line. (I was just venting since working towards something for years where a country boy like me was able to connect dots that others were dismissing is a little frustrating). He should at least get the part about males and females correct though. Females in this new sub population slightly outnumber males, not the way around as he is stating it. But it cetainly isn't my place to tell the guy with all the initials after his name that he hasn't even read the literature correctly. I should stay focused on the fact that information that will help people is getting out there.
