Alan is having alot of memory loss. He wakes up unsure of where we are, he doesn't know where the bathroom is. He reverts back almost 30 years sometimes. He asked me this morning what mess hall We were to eat in. I don;t think he really knew who I was but as he woke up with me in his bed I must belong there. We've been married almost 28 years. Is this a normal reaction to the med's? He is getting 12 mg slow acting every 12 hours and about another 16 mg over 16 hrs of the fast acting for breakthrough pain.

Mar - first question. What is he getting for pain? You posted this under the name "Dylanton" but I'm wondering if you mean "Dilaudid"? Dilanton is an anti-seizure medication.

I can't remember the age of your husband, but strong pain medication affects anyone but is especially potent to older patients. You might want to discuss this with his Dr, and see if he have any suggestions. Relief of pain is, of course, the top concern here, but he will know if it's possible to switch to something else that is as effective in pain relief but doesn't cause as much confusion...

Mar, several of the pain meds. John was on caused hallucinations, memory loss, and confusion. Tell his Doc what is happening. When someone is having that kind of reaction, you almost have to be watching over them 24-7- and you will quickly become exhausted without help! Amy in the Ozarks
