I have been scheduled for a panendoscopy biopsy in the back of my throat to check something suspicious out. Has anyone here had one and what should I expect? My ENT who did my original surgery will be doing it, and explained things to me pretty well, but would like to hear from someone who has actually had one.
Good morning,
Sorry I can't shed any light on the procedure, but I can wish you the best of luck for good results.
Let us know how it turns out.
Tony
It's an examination, usually under general anesthesia, of the pharynx, larynx, trachea, esophagus with a rigid and flexible endoscope, sometimes with biopsies. I had several, one during direct biopsy as an outpatient, and another before a neck dissection. I had no ill effects, other than from the anesthesia, maybe a sore throat, if that, with the usual dietary, medicine restrictions, risks for any surgery, and someone has to pick you up or should, if its outpatient. It's also called a triple endoscope or triple scope, combining a Largynoscopy, esphoscopy, bronchoscopy.
Good luck.
Thanks, Paul. I figured if anybody had one, you might have. Yes. I am having general anesthetic and my husband will drive me. Hoping it will be nothing, as I am nearly 5 years out. A little bit stressed at this point, though. I have the procedure on Monday.
Not to quibble over words but it is an operation. Mine was done under general, wheeled into op room like any other real surgery with anesthesiologist and full crew. They go in and do "examine" but also do surgery and get samples which are sent off to biopsy. I do not think they wait to do any further surgery during this procedure. So in that sense it is diagnostic and an "exam".
You will be fine and do need someone to drive you home as you will be in recovery for a bit and feeling off a bit.
Good luck,
don
My ENT did a neck dissection after my triple scope, but that was pre-planned, and if recurrent cancer was found in the oropharynx, he was going to do the split lip method surgery. They also did a triple scope before I had a salivary stone removed from the duct during my first direct biopsy, but that was planned too. That did hurt since I had a plug, stitches in the floor of my mouth for a while.
I am hoping that it will turn out to be OK. My ENT said it could just be some scar tissue or one of a number of other things, but with my history, I need to have it checked out. Yes, I realize it is considered surgery, and my husband is going to drive me.
Regardless - fingers crossed and hugs to you... kick it in the butt and be done with it. Hopefully you get a free and clear on your biopsy... you more than deserve it.

Well, the cancer is back. This time on the base of my tongue. I meet with my ENT again tomorrow to look at my options...possibly robotic surgery in Cleveland.
That really sucks!!!! :o(
BOT? Is it an extension of your original cancer - or is it an HPV related new primary? hugs and love to you.
Sorry to hear of your recurrence. I wonder similar. If it was BOT to begin with, being it can move anteriorly, and tongue cancer usually not to the posterior to the BOT? In any case, good luck with your consultations.
My ENT said that this is a totally new cancer. My previous cancer was on the lateral tongue, with 2 lymph nodes involved. I see a specialist in Cleveland next Friday.
