Posted By: Phas Lump in throat, near tonsils. Could it be cancer? - 08-19-2013 07:53 PM
For the past few weeks I've been starting to think that I have oral cancer. Two weeks ago a small bump appeared in behind my wisdom tooth. It's painless, small, but I've read that if it doesn't disappear in 14 days it might be a tumor. Nevertheless, a few days ago I started feeling something in my throat. Like a small piece of nut stuck in my throat that I couldn't swallow. I didn't pay much attention to it, but today I saw quite big bump in my throat near the tonsils. You can see it in this picture:

(you can also see something similar to oral candidiasis on my tongue, it's there for almost 3 months)

The bump looks like the a peach pit: it's a bit wrinkly. There are some visible blood-vessels on it (or inside of it, not sure, but they're visible).

I feel this bump every time I swallow saliva/food, but it's not painful. I've made an appointment with the dentist on the 21st of August, but I'm not sure if he/she will come up with the right diagnosis.. What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance,
Phas

P.S. I am 18 years old and I've smoked for 1.5 (one and a half) years. I'm not a heavy smoker, I smoke around 20-30 cigarettes a week. Sometimes even less. But I'm quitting now for sure.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention, that about 1-2 weeks ago I started feeling pain somewhere between my jaw and right ear whenever I moved my lower jaw to the left or clenched my teeth hard. The pain was quite strong at first, but now it hurts less.
Phas,

You need to consult with a ear nose and throat specialist. Let us know what they say.
Hi Phas,

I'll second what David said. We're not diagnosticians and can't tell you what that is from looking at a photo or by descriptions of symptoms. Definitely seek out an ENT to check it out and keep us in the loop.

Now...about smoking. I was a smoker (cigarettes, pipe and cigars) for 35 years. I drank a bit too in my youth. My cancer was caused by tobacco and alcohol use as well as being HPV positive which I'm sure I came into contact with when I was a young man as well.

Regardless of how this turns out, QUIT! No if's,and's or but's. Also, look into the HPV vaccine.

Positive thoughts and prayers

Thank you very much for your answers.

As I said, I will be seeing a dentist. Won't he be able to see the problem? You see, the nearest ENT works in a clinic, which is 150km (around 93 miles) away. Is dentist enough, or should I really visit ENT?
You should see either an ENT or an oral surgeon. Most dentists rarely see things like this. Its usually the specialists I mentioned who are most familiar with oral cancer and other issues in a persons mouth. Dentists pretty much focus on the teeth.

Good luck!
It's angina..

Thanks for returning to give your diagnosis. Not every member is so lucky. Its not possible to diagnose someone over the internet by a photo and couple words which is why we referred you to a professional.

This goes to show that not every lump or bump that looks serious is anything to be concerned about. Bacterial angina or viral angina is one of the many other things that can happen in a persons mouth besides oral cancer. It could have been anything, luckily this person had a dentist who was very thorough.
