hello, I'm the spouse of a cancer patient. My hubby has SCC of right tonsil, two lymph nodes and tumor on right side hpv 16 pos. started treatments 6/21/10. He has 6 more rad trtments of 35 and one more chemo out of 3 total. I've visited this forum and read many things that have been helpful in particular that we aren't alone.
Question, what is a good treatment for the skin? He was using prutec, and now past three days pure Aloe. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Positive

Positive, when my burns were really bad in the late stages the best thing my doc prescribed was Silver Sulfadiazine. I believe it's an old line medication, but it really did the trick for me.

Let us know how he's doing.

My daughter cut leaves off an aloe plant and rubbed it directly on my neck right when I came out of radiation, before we even headed home. I had a minimum of burning. He's almost done with rads - great.

I used prescription Beta-Val cream. My neck was burned and had large open wounds. It healed and didnt leave one scar. Many here have used Aquaphor.

Best of luck to your hubby with the last few rad treatments. He will start to feel a little better very soon. Usually about 2 or 3 wks after tx ends. Then let the healing begin!!!!

My husband used Eucerin(that stuff is so thick) initially . When it really got bad he also went on the prescription stuff. It really did help.

I used prescription Biafine. It cannot be used on open wounds, but it sure cleared up the burn in no time.

Take care,

The silver sulfadiazine worked for me. This is my 2nd experience with it. In 1967 when I was badly burned and in a military hospital in Japan, I was one of the test subjects for what we at the time called "white lightning". It helped then too.

I used Aquaphor and pure aloe and cleared up with in 2 weeks after rads and chemo were completed. Dr also gave me Eucerin to use with them. Whatever is used, use it religiously.

I used Aquaphor and then the doctors gave me some neck dressing that had the silver sulfadiazine embedded in it but I didn't like it so I pitched it after two goes at it. I think just making sure the area is lathered well does the trick.

Thanks to all for your replies. We have been using the pure aloe and that seems to help. Tomorrow is last day of radiation. Hurray!.
