I have read folks adding protien powder to their drinks what do you use? I need to get Ron something to add to his IF he don't get that NG out Thursday but will do anyway if he does get it out depending on how he is healing.
Thanks

I use whey protein powder from the makers of Muscle Milk. You can get it in either chocolate or vanilla at Costco very reasonably and its has 27g of protein per scoop. I would recommend getting a whisk ball shaker bottle too, you can get them at the RiteAide for cheap or GNC. They are easy and save the cleanup of a blender.

I use vegan protein - vega is one of them - any plant based protein is good!

Hi Suez,

I have used whey protein powder and plant based protein powder. Whey is usually made from dairy and plant based can be made from pea, rice and hemp or a combination as well as sprouts. As with any food it best to seek out the highest quality. I always look for organic and/or pharmaceutical grade supplements. For years I've used Life Extension Foundation (www.lef.org) that uses the highest standard in producing their supplements. They offer substantial discounts to members. Amazon.com also has an auto ship policy that offers 15% discounts which helps reduce costs.

I used whey protein for many years but recently switched to a plant based protein called Life's Basic Plant Protein. I switched because I decided to go to a full plant based diet and eliminate all dairy and animal food for environmental, spiritual and health reasons. I'm a firm believer in using only fresh food (organic when possible) ingredients in balanced recipes to make sure I get variety and the best quality. Hopefully it will add to my lifespan or at the very least keep me disease free.

Good health!

www.livestrong.com/article/17876-soy-protein-vs.-whey-protein/

Here's a good article from livestrong on the differences between the types of protein.

Thanks Eric - it was an interesting article - what they didn't include and should have are the animal free, soy free, protein products. The plant based proteins that include, pea, hemp, Flax, and Brown rice proteins. These aren't as smooth as some of the soys but depending on who you believe far better for you - also another plus...?? It's said that sugar contributes to the inflammation process that supports cancer - most of these vegan products out there have natural sugars like stevia, or xylitol that do not effect the glycemic index! smile soy they say is now so manipulated that it's scary!!! smile take care!

Suez - Good suggestions above. The only thing I would add is whichever kind you decide to get, try to get a small quantity to start. I bought some protein powder to add to my son's milkshakes and I didn't happen to mention to him that I added a small quantity (about one tablespoon) to his milkshake. (The Health Food Store where I got it said there was absolutely no taste to the protein powder) Big mistake! After the first small sip he took, he asked me what I put in his milkshake and refused to have any part of it! Ever! From then on, he would always ask me what was in anything I served him before he even tried it. Hope everything goes well with the appointment on Thursday.

Anne-Marie, I do believe your son could tell that something wasnt right with his shake. I didnt like the high protein powder in my milk shakes either. My taste became super sensitive where I could taste a couple grains of salt or even worse pepper.

How about trying good old Carnation Very High Calorie? You can order cases of it for about $44 total from the Amazon link on the main forum pages. If refrigerated, it might not be too bad to drink. I would drink yoo-hoo while going thru radiation. I loved that stuff, for some reason I could taste the chocolate and it was very soothing to my sore mouth and throat.

I understand people have different views on diets etc so I'm actually steering clear of the "more healthy and responsible" parts of protien and just focus on the main differences and benefits/drawbacks to each and then everyone can make their own "educated" choices.

The body needs protiens, it's a macronutrient usually found in food such as meats, dairy, beans etc...that the body breaks down into amino acids, the building blocks if you will. Out of the 22 amino acids, the human body cannot synthesize some of them on it's own and need to be supplied by diet, these are called the "essential" amino acids.

Now we need to look at "complete" and "incomplete" protiens, which are sources of protien that contain adequate proportions of the essential amino acids to sustain the dietary needs of the human body. With the exception of soy and quinoa, vegetable sources are usually significantly low in lysine and to a smaller extent methoinine and threonine and are therefore considered "incomplete". Animal, soy and quinoa sources are considered complete as they have significant proportions of all the essential aminos.

When looking at protien powders we need to be making sure they are "complete" and give you all of your essentials, if not, why supplement. You can get get "complete" vegetable based powders they just have to have added significant amounts of lysene and a smaller extent of threonine and methoinine to them to get them to be considered "complete" if they are not derived from soy or quinoa.

Protiens actually have a Biological Value scale with the bar being set by the Egg, which has a BV level of 100. (Eggs are a super food on a biological value scale by the way) When protiens are compared they are compared to the egg. Vegetable protien is lower on the scale and is generally absorbed slower by the body, however usually has higher levels of antioxidants. Soy is on the about the same level as the egg, is again absorbed slower. Whey has a higher BV then the egg and is absorbed much faster...which can lead to waste, I'll get into that shortly.

IF you are not constantly tearing down and rebuilding your body or are in a hypermetabolic state (healing etc...) then plant based protiens make sense for your body (as long as they are complete). They are effecient and have higher levels of antioxidants. If you need your protien to be absorbed quickly as your cells are constantly in need of building blocks to gain or maintain, then whey is the way to go.

I use whey due to my lifestyle, and I like cows. I like to eat cows, specifically steaks and ribs however I think any part of the cow covered in BBQ sauce is fair game in my book. I don't even care that the cow has been hopped up on hormones and steriods, in fact I say hop them up on antidepressants too so I know I'm eating a happy cow. It should be happy, because it's making me happy by eating it. When I die of heart disease or colon cancer, I'll die happy.

Somethings got to kill you it may as well make you happy right. If OC kills me I know I had a lot of good sex getting there smile I would've dodged that bullet with Gardasil if it were available or known to me but hey I'll take the consequences for the action...ahem.

Sorry for the ridiculous, I wouldn't be me if I didn't go there smile

Eric: You crack me up.... sometimes I have to read your posts twice because I can't believe what I read....

U crazy nut Eric!! I love you and your honestness and living life in the way do, in humor! Cuz if I didn't live it that way, I'd be insane from the way this world really is and what life has dealt me so I just laugh about it! And yes...I too have had a great sex life in my younger days, and I loved almost all of it! lol And Ron didn't have his swallow study, it was just a followup. His apt for that is the 23rd of this month, but, he is eating now himself, so far no pneumonia, he ate 3 yes 3 bowls of ice cream yesterday, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup and Oreo cookie. I asked him how his belly was this morning and he said fine, I ate a little bit of the PB one with him and the chunks of cups and mine wasn't fine...Saturday morning he wanted scrambled eggs, so I made them in some bacon grease and he loved it, said it was great not to burp up formula taste.

Ingrid, I should probably read my posts 2x too, protein is a micronutrient and not a macronutrient...(smacks head) I'm an idiot. Hahaha!
Posted By: SUEZ Re: Protein Powder's what kind? - 08-16-2011 02:33 PM
Eric I told Ron about you, lol how you are so positive in your outlook on life as each day comes you grasp it and enjoy it to the fullest, your "beliefs" in herbal non legal meds(why do you think he ate 3 bowls of ice cream yesterday?) smile i love messing with him when he's so "happy" he cracks me up!
Posted By: EricS Re: Protein Powder's what kind? - 08-17-2011 04:27 AM
Sue, I'm glad that Ron is eating and I really do appreciate you my dear. You rock.

Personally I think messing with "happy" people should be a sport and judged. What I find funny is knocking on their door really loudly and yelling "Police!" it always gets a rise out of them and a good laugh for me smile

I'm kidding that's cruel...funny but cruel especially if you ruin a dime bag of happiness laugh That's happiness abuse and should require counseling.

Live life, be well

roflmao! omg, i laughed outloud when i read your response eric and i'm at work, oh well they are used to me talking to myself anyway so what's an outloud laugh coming from my office. i never thought about doing that one bout yelling out POLICE hahahaha my ex husband is on the SWAT team. i'm sure my kid would have pooped his pants if I done that when he was younger!
Yesterday I came home from work and Tuesday's are BW3's Wing night I go almost every week, and there was Ron all cleaned up, showered and shaved his "half a beard" that is left that grows and he went out with me! He looked very good, best he's looked since before his surgery actually. He came home afterwards and he was hungry after watching me eat and I made him some Barilla I think it is Mushroom Alfredo sauce from the jar with some fettucini. He told me this morning he feels really good, I told him cuz he's eating again getting food in his belly. Yay!!

i blended ice cream, whole cream and ensure with tasteless whey powder for a minute so that there was no grit the first time i set this in front of my dad. i expected complaints but got a thumbs up.
Posted By: Caco Re: Protein Powder's what kind? - 08-25-2011 06:35 PM
...and it's like 600 calories and 25g of protein
Posted By: Cheryld Re: Protein Powder's what kind? - 08-25-2011 07:00 PM
Awesome! Check there are some out there that have even higher protein - for me one and a half scoops of the protein powder I use mixed with 4 tablespoons of cottage chees, almond milk, fruit, and flax oil yields about 50 -60 gms of protein, I let my intake during thte day take care of the rest..
Chocolate is not bad taste wise. I would avoid heavily sugared products though... Try something with stevia or xylitol as a sweetener (all natural plant based sweeteners that have no impact on blood sugar!, sugar promotes thrush, and feeds cancer (Pet scans work by reading sugar uptake in cells. Cancer cells are sugar hogs, no sugar less growth? ) just a theory but one that has been studied. High carb products that have simple sugars are the worst, complex carbs like fruits are better. There are some good ice-cream products out there with no sugar and some great vegan proteins as well. I'm still going through them trying to find one that has no grit (sun warrior is great - very fine and blend able) and one that has a good taste (mrm veggie protein - chocolate) there has to be one out there that has both !!! I'll find it smile in the mean time I continue to experiment on me!

Good luck, glad your dad is doing okay! Hugs

Chocolate still tastes bad to my husband, but fortunately fruits and vegetables taste good. He uses Now Sports whey powder with natural vanilla with his lunch protein shakes. His department has a kitchen with a blender - he mixes milk, whey powder,Benefibar, a Carnation Breakfast Essentials packet, and one or two of the individual serving Musselman's applesauce cups. It still takes him a long time to eat, so a protein shake for lunch works well. I mix the whey and benefibar up, and portion it out in baggies so its easy for him at work.

Awesome!!! As long as he's eating it that's great - I still have a power smoothie for breakfast!! Chocolate with banana - I toss in an organic all natural fruit juice that has real fruit and vegetables in it - it tastes great - I can't taste sweet but chocolate is okay! smile whatever works!

That's just so bizarre about the tastes. Cheryl, can you whistle? That's one of the things that just came back for my husband. He puts seed out for the birds in the morning, and whistles to let them know its there - the blue jays in particular respond and come diving at the feeders. He found it very depressing when his whistle was out of whack with the mucositis, and is glad it has returned.

Not yet - but almost! I can form a whistle nd make a little tweet but no real whistle but then I was never. Good whistler! frown take care! And yes taste is very individual!

Speaking of tastes, and this may be going off track a bit, but do any of you out there have, or had a putrid sweet taste ALL THE TIME, from morning until night. I wake up with it, and so far haven't found anyone else who has it or experienced it. Having every test known to man (not even associated with oral cancer or radiation, etc.), but to no avail. Just wondering since tastes are mentioned here. Thanks,
julieann
