I assume that this is crapolla? It's been making the rounds on Facebook...

The message claims that Graviola, also called Soursop is a miraculous, natural cancer cell killer which is 10,000 times stronger than Chemotherapy. It is a fact that Soursop has certain health benefits, attributed to its anti-parasitic, anti-microbial and anti-depressive properties, and recent studies have shown that it MAY have chemotherapeutic potential, but the part of the message saying it is natural cancer cell killer, 10,000 times stronger than Chemotherapy, is a certain hoax.

Of course this is a hoax!!!! If there was a cure for cancer it would already be on the market and everyone would know about it. I really hate the people who put these things out and make it sound so believable that it makes you second guess if its real or not. Darn scammers!!!! Then there are the ones who are trying to make money off cancer patients, I dont know which bunch is worse.

Facebook is the perfect venue for hoaxes as it is unmonitored. Things like this will spread like wildfire and there is no one to remove the garbage.

Christine
Thanks for deleting the link to such scurrilous nonsense.

Shauneen:

You need to get a better class of Facebook friends but in the meantime, let them know I have a bridge in Brooklyn that I inherited and can sell to them, plus I have a banker friend in Nigeria with a great deal for them- wink
First it is NOT a fact that Sorusop has any more health benefits than fruit or tea (and fruit and tea are healthful. Instead it's just an assertion by the usual suspects.
Sorusop or graviola is just the fruit and leaves of the guanabana tree (Annona muricata), also known as "soursop," "cherimoya," "custard apple," and "Brazilian paw paw." Yes, medicine men in Peru used it in a tea to "cure cancer" when there was no radiation or chemo. Back in 2007 and 2008, a whole group of these "miracle cures", mostly tea based and including soursop websites were shut down by the Federal Trade Commission for fraud.
There is no valid substantiated study showing that it may have any chemo benefits. Instead. like many many other things that have been proven worthless for treating human cancer, if you take cancer cells and put them in a petri dish, Soursop can kill them. But then what doesn't? Vinegar does, so does bleach. (And Yes, there are nuts who think they can cure cancer based on that.) That's it for the studies- outside of non peer reviewed and unreliable ones out of China and Korea.
This cruel hoax got a new life back in 2011, when a "Doctor" - turns out to have a PhD in Victorian literature not medicine- wrote in a Psychology Today blog and linked to several bogus studies - done overseas and spun the usual conspiracy tale of NIH hiding its own internal evidence of how great this works.
If there is any sure sign of a cancer fraud, it's claiming that NIH is hiding the cure.
So yes, this is total crapolla.

If anything else, it makes a good soursop punch.

1 Ripe soursop
1 cup evaporated or regular milk
3/4 cup water
1 dash of bitters
1 dash of almond essence or vanilla
1 can of condensed milk

It's a cherimoya here.
Paul's recipe sounds good, especially the condensed milk part.
Pity the blackbirds have eaten all mine.

That's the way they make soursop punch in the Caribbean.

Oh WOW guys! I was just wondering if anyone had heard about this hoax. I didn't mean to even remotely imply that it might be real. That was not my intent at all. (But I know the road to hell is paved with good intentions)
The link I attached was to a hoax site - not a page that said it was a cancer cure.
You guys can be brutal at times, but this horrible disease is brutal all of the time.

The response was actually quite mild. Posting a link to any hoax website is against OCF forum rules which is why the link was removed. I know it was not your intent to assist with furthering this scam, but posting a link to a hoax site would help them by sending additional traffic to their site. OCF is committed to the Health on the Net Code ensuring only correct medical info is available. Here is an excerpt from the OCF forum rules (which are not optional)....

The URL of a page on the Internet array(post the URL, not the content of the page!), after checking with OCF. AGAIN - Please check with OCF prior to this. YOU MAY NOT POST URL's to alternative cures, religious sites, or other cancer sites which we have not reviewed for accuracy and appropriateness to this forum. For all of its good, the web has a great deal of misinformation, outdated information, and outright wrong or deceptive information on it. We wish to protect our readers by reviewing other site's that you may wish to refer people to. This requirement does not apply to US government sites like the NCI, or the American Cancer Society sites.

Please note that there are tons of bogus cancer cure claims, herbal remedies without documented proof of efficacy, and treatment centers in foreign countries trying to sell hope, that have no proven clinical benefit. If you are a proponent of these ideas and places -DO NOT BRING THEM UP ON THIS MESSAGE BOARD. OCF is dedicated to the discussion of proven treatment modalities, and adjunctive array(not alternative) therapies to treat side effects. FAILURE TO ABIDE BY THIS RULE WILL GET YOUR URL BANNED FROM THE BOARD. This is not an unrestricted open forum or democracy. We regulate what is posted here, and unsubstantiated treatments with no peer-reviewed published support in science are not welcome. Please choose a different message board if you are interested in discussing these kinds of things. A good rule of thumb is that if it has been put on the quack watch site array(www.quackwatch.com) it should not be discussed here.

I read the rules when I first joined, but did not remember the Quackwatch and other hoax info site rule. Do you need to delete the link you posted? wink

Shauneen, I too have fallen into that briar patch, as have many others. To be honest, Charm's response was almost downright "charming" compared to some previous posts...:) But he's right. I know it stings a bit now, long after that goes away, you'll have the wealth of information and support that is this board. Hang in there, and we all agree, this disease is brutal all the time. Ana

Shauneen

In my opinion, your comment to Christine that the Quackwatch link she posted would need to be deleted somehow falls into the hoax link category is not rendered funny by adding an emoticon. Christine's response and that Quackwatch link assumed that you would want to avoid passing on bogus treatments and false hopes. Had Christine left your link in your post, it gets picked up by spiders and then when this bogus treatment is searched by Google, one of the results that appears would be your post (with the offending link) and the OCF forum URL, implying validity.
The hard work and effort the administrators put into keeping this forum free of all the quack remedies that pollute the other forms deserves appreciation. Now my posts often deserve emoticon responses and posts as snarky as my own, but Christine's did not.
