Hello all,
I have looked into getting more life insurance and realize
how impractical that is right now. Then, I began thinking
about getting mortgage life insurance through our mortgage
company. I know this, normally, would not be the best insurance, but things aren't normal anymore. I have been cancer free
for about a year and 1/2 now and I don't know if it is as hard to get as more life insurance.
Has anyone tried this or looked into this option? It would make
me feel better if I could at least get this going, if nothing else.
Thanks for your help!
Debbie

as far as i have been told unless you are 10 yrs + since completion of treatment it is next to impossible and hugely expensive for the little available ... once the c word is in your records they are very skeptical ... and smokers thought they had it tough frown

maybe someone else has found a place but i haven't found a one that is willing ...

Finding anything affordable when you are under 5 years is just about impossible. 10 years out is better, but never as cheap as for those that have no cancer background. That's if you can find it at all. You have awhile to wait. If you think about the cost of some of this, you might be better served taking what would have been your payment and putting it into savings/investments for the future.

I know that regular life insurance is out of the question. Thank goodness I had some (and do you ever have enough)but I was
told by someone that getting mortgage insurance was almost
a plus for the lender. It is actually a help to both parties.

Usually, you get this when you first get your mortgage, not after
you have had one for awhile, like mine. I just don't want my husband to be so stuck if anything should happen. I am having
one of those times when I am thinking alot about the future of my familiy. I will get over it another day. But, I hate to call my
mortgage co and spill the beans, so to speak.
I will call someone and investigate and get back. I just thought
someone on hear might be in the mortgage business.
Thanks!

I have a Cancer policy with Mutual of Omaha, and they have sent me 3 offers for Life Ins. At my age it is kinda of high . They know all about my cancer and they say I can't be turned down. The cancer Ins sure came in handy. Been thinking about more life ins, but I have no wife or girlfriend so why would I? The American Legion and AARP both have them thru a company too.

This is an intersting topic. I do have the mortgage insurance and also life insurance. Im wondering if you already have these things for years before you are diagnosed if that would make any difference. Anybody know if you can make changes to existing policies after having cancer. Debbie, you have me thinking now.

I don't believe an existing policy can be impacted, unless you knew you had cancer when it was issued.

Often your existing life policies will offer you the chance to increase your current coverage and if they do, jump on it as they almost never ask any medical questions. Just don't go hog wild with the amount of increase.

David,
The thing that I think of when they say no questions asked, is
that "if" God forbid, something did happen and then they
would say that could not pay because of cancer. They would
have to give back the money paid in but no insurance. Ever
heard of that?
I had not thought about calling and upping my existing policy.
Would that be chancey too? I have had it for 30 years. I think
I ask too many questions, but we will find the answers.
Christine,
Know any insurance geeks?
Thanks everybody,
Debbie

I do believe most Ins Cos have a 2 year clause , for new policies, that they can refund premiums paid. On existing Policies, they can't drop you or change the coverage. So if you have Ins and it's been in affect for more than 2 yrs, don't worry about it.

If they don't ask or make you sign a statement where you would falsify a answer to a question, then they can't later deny coverage, or should I say they would be hard pressed to deny coverage.

Funny this topic came up as I've been wondering the same thing. We bought a home before his reoccurrence and was wondering if we could do this, too. The offer came in the mail, but I didn't want to poke the c-bear...plus I didn't want him to feel bad if we were turned down.

I'm interested to what anyone with insurance experience can find out and let us all know.

Thanks!

Be careful about generalizations on insurance -- Each state has its own Ins Commission and the laws may differ, plus the InsCo's themselves have some latitude in how they write policies.

I just got off the phone with my insurance company. The agent is coming out on Thursday to update my policy. From our conversation, my policy which is a mortgage life insurance policy that Ive had for 10 years will actually go down. It will go down due to the fact that Im now a non smoker. I did tell them Ive had cancer and he said it doesnt matter, its changing an existing policy so it doesnt have any medical questions. Once the insurance man comes out, I will know more and I will ask about anybody getting a brand new policy who has had cancer. Im sure every state and company are different, but this might be helpful.

Way to go Christine-just ask and you shall receive.
I will be very interested in what you hear. Make sure
you ask about someone who already has a mortgage as opposed
to someone who is buying a new home.
Thanks!
Debbie

That agent is going to be sorry that he called me by the time Im done asking him questions. Poor guy. Im very picky and will want to see it in writing, not just what the guy tells me. I will try to get some info to share here and find out if every state has different rules.

I was licensed in the Sate of Ohio as an Ins agent. You just couldn't stop a policy of any becauses. The laws that regulate them are basically still intact.

I couldn't even get insurance to pay off my credit cards. I understand that some companies will offer life insurance after 7 years cancer free. Read the small print. Oftentimes they can exclude you because of pre-existing conditions even if they didn't ask any medical questions.

Do you think this is true of people who have heart conditions
and such? I am even not going to tell my work that I am having
a small procedure done to remove a basel cell carcinoma from
my leg (like Laura Bush) only mine is not as bad as hers. Hers was
squamas cell. They will all think I am going to die again and
give me "the look". It is not even related to my jaw cancer that
was removed and now I say I am cancer free for the moment. If I tell my work, I am afraid they will figure out a way to get rid of
me that I cannot prove.
Must we go around feeling we have to hide stuff? I did not even
think about credit card insurance!! THey usually want to stuff
that down your throat!
wow!

I just got another Ins offer that states it doesn't matter about illness or injury. But like most they have a 2 year full enforcement provision. They will give back your payments plus interest but after 2 years, the full policy is in affect. I really hope I didn't trash the Ins offer I got before this one. It was the best offer I have had. I have enough to make my ex smile when I die, LOL

Debbie, I am not completely sure about this but I understand that there is an insurance company "clearing houses" much like credit companies that have databases for those using private health insurance and they share this information. Whether that has been impacted by HIPAA I don't know. To stay completely off of the radar you have to pay cash at the doctor.

Sorry guys, the agent cancelled my appointment 2 hours before he was scheduled to come out. I havent rescheduled with him, I will now go directly to the main insurance office so I can review every policy I have with them. It will be a couple weeks before I have time to go, I will update what they say.

Interesting discussion. I have pursued every life insurance, mortgage insurance angle I can since diagnosis. When I was diagnosed I was in the process of signing up for Aflack cancer insurance but they had a 6 month waiting period any way and wouldn't have had to pay. The important thing is that you read the conditions and know the laws in your state. I actually had insurance for 2 months while they grilled me weekly for more past medical records and such and then they just "quietly" sent me back my premiums. On October 9, it will have been 5 years "cancer free" and I am going knocking and pounding the pavement to get something. I know I can get seomething from work but I don't know when for sure.

I listed an Ins Co that will sell to us under insurance

I can't get mortgage Ins as I tried but have been getting life ins offers thru the American Legion that has no past medical history. This was in the last week and from times before.
