Hi Margaret

i guess the real problem here is what caused the goitre,Thyroid goitres are not new and the usual treatment is complete removal of the thyroid gland, followed by medication for life.Radioactive iodine has also been around for many many years, and can be used to shrink the goitre before surgery or just to treat it if its not to big.If this condition is related to radiation damage from Dans tx the waters are not quite so clear are they? Its a hard one margaret but as in everything you need all the information and consequences before you can make such a big decision. Is he being seen by an endocrinologist?
My 18 year old niece in Abu Dhabi has a goitre which was diagnosed when she was sixteen.she has been struggling on medication and her lastblood results showed she was not stabilizing as they had hoped. When she comes home to college next month they are going to discuss the pros and cons of surgery

She is pale and thin and always tired and has slightly bulging eyes(a very common first indicator of a proble)but the lump doesn't seem to have gotten much biggger over the last couple of years. But of course she is young and healthy and they say she will live a normal life.
