Hello all, I am just looking for stuff about oral cancer. My mom had neck disection and a spot removed from her tongue in december. Everything went well, she is a great healer. She is now 3 weeks into radiation and is having a heck of a time....she is not eating well, and with her surgery she had a feeding tube and had troubles with that. HELP with any ideas...
I am a 39 yr old by the way and we are moving to the hope lodge this week in iowa city...BEAUTIFUL PLACE!!!!

Buy her Carnation VHC and make her drink about 4 cans a dayplus what she can eat otherwise, 560 calories in a can of VHC.It helped me and without I would have lost more than 70 lbs and could have gotten a job in a cornfield. LOL

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.
--- Passed away 5/14/14, will be greatly missed by everyone here

IG,

You have come to the right place. Search this site for all the reading materials and if you read everything here you'll probably know more than her doctors. Well close enough.

Ask any/all questions you may have. She most likely is now entering the worse phase of the radiation which can last from now thru the 3 week or so POST Tx with the weeks Post Tx being the worse. There are many "side effects" that she can encounter and most of them can be tied directly to insufficient hydration and insufficient calories. We tell patients to drink 48 ozs of water and at least 2500 - 3000 calories EACH AND EVERY DAY. This is hard since your mouth can burn like hell so staying on top of her pain meds is equally important so that she can feel like swallowing.

Tell her we are all here to help her and you any way we can.

We are moving today to hope lodge is, a beautiful place for people who are going thru treatment at the Iowa City University Hospitals can stay. I will be with her there as much as possible, for I also have a daughter at home and a farm to take care of. We are approx 110 miles from iowa city, so we have drove the first 3 weeks. Those miles on her were almost worse than the treatment. THANKS so much for all your blogs, will be putting her HOPE LODGE website up today....THANKS again~! Off to iowa city!!!
