What sort of troubles did she have with her PEG? I have had three, and the second one of a piece of s*** (It was poorly designed and too small in inner diameter, so it was constantly getting clogged), but I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't had the first one. When I needed a third one, I went back to the Doc who had done the first one.

Again you must push the hydration and calories in her anyway you can.

Water and Carnation Instant Breakfast VHC were my best friends for a very long time.

She had the feeding tube thru her nose, which was a pain, but she had really bad diarehha, it was like it went right thru her. She had a gravity bag, and seemed very fast....
She is just drinking water, and getting down the essential pills...not much other than that. She had some thrush but that has cleared up.

If she's having diarrhea, it's possible that the food is going in too fast. I had that problem, with some sweating first, and using a food pump set at a very low rate fixed it.

Hey there, Iowagirl. Thank you for the good thoughts you're passing my way. I am returning the same for you and your mom as she goes through her remaining treatments. Take care.

Cookey, I spoke with my Mom last night. She has an appointment w/the surgeon this morning and then to the hospital for some pre-surgery stuff. She told me they will be doing a lymphectomy and a right radical neck dissection. In your explanation of what a neck dissection entailed you mentioned that in a radical one, they removed the jugular vein... how do they do that I thought that was something you had to have??? Don't mean to sound stupid but....

Hi Honey
thats only a maybe not a definate,it depends on the tumour positon and whether the jugular vein is under threat from invasion or erosion.I was surprised when i was told this as i thought OMG but apparently its quite standard.

Liz, thank you very much for that link. It answered a lot of my questions. My mom counts on the dr. to explain to her what he's going to do. She has no computer to look all of this up, sometimes I think that may be for the better. I wrestle with whether to tell her what I'm learning or not. She wants to know what to expect so I can't wait to find out tonight what the dr. told her. I'm trying to think of things to do with her to help take her mind off of the wait before surgery. Thanks again for helping me understand it better - I really appreciate it. Take care of you - Nancy T
