Cancer of Tongue, SCC early Stage 1, Dx 3/13/07, partial glossectomy 4/14/07 found no residual carcinoma and a granular cell tumor with pseudo epitheliomatous hyperplasia.

Retired Dentist, 59 years old at diagnosis. SCC of the left lateral border of the tongue (Stage I). Partial glossectomy and 30 nodes removed, 4/6/05. Nodes all clear. No chemo no radiation 18 year survivor.

Im having a problem with swelling, not just the area where the tumor was removed. Its under my chin and also swollen on my left side of my ncek. This is approx. 48 hours after surgery. Im thinking it somehow got infected. The area where the tumor was removed was cauterized, so not sure how it could be infected. Im getting pretty worried and am thinking I need antibiotics. Any ideas?

You may have the Turkey chin or waddle we all develop post Rad. Some of it will go away but most of it stays around, at least it did for me and I exercise like an idiot. I was also warned by my RO not to even think about having it removed by a friendly plastic guy due to the cellular damage remaining in that radiated area. I am comfortable with that but my wife isn't. But hey, she's perfect at her age or any age for that matter and she still thinks she needs a million "improvements". You should see her when she finds out that a plastic guy is eating in her restaurant...boy do they get special treatment!

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Round 2 never ends!!!
My surgery went well on 4/16. My ENT said he is almost certain he got it all, margins were clear.
Since the surgery I have felt awful. My jaw hurts like heck and is lumpy and a dark red like a bruise. I have been nauseous and had diarrhea for a week. I have lost 10 more pounds and am very weak and tired.
Needless to say, todays re-check with my ENT didnt go well at all. I am now on antibiotics. I also must rinse my mouth with a prescription mouth rinse using a waterpik to get the solution way back to where the surgery was.
If no major improvement by Wed., my ENT will be admitting me to the hospital. He also wants me to see my chemo doc when Im better and said I should probably do a few rounds of chemo. My chemo doc said chemo by itself doesnt work that well. Has anyone else heard that about chemo alone for oral cancer?
The news isnt the best, but I can be happy that I have a good doctor taking care of me. This will be over soon so I can finally move on with my life.

Sorry you aren't feeling any better than you are.
I would guess that it all depends on what type of chemo they are going to use but when my dad had chemo (Cisplatin) the way it was explained to us was the chemo would attack the cancer cells and make his tumor squishy (for lack of better words) and then the radiation would work better but the chemo by itself would not do the job. I'm sure it's more involved than how I've explained it and maybe someone can chime in and give a better description.
Hang in there girl. I'm amazed by your strength through all this.

CG to Father, 75 yo with SCC of the mouth; upper maxillectomy and neck diss. performed on 5/23/07. Father also suffered heart attack during surgery and now has CHF. RT complete on 8/28/07. Cancer back 11/27/07. RT and Chemo to start on 12/17. Cancer back 6/17/08. Finally at rest 08/08/08.

Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,357 Likes: 5 | So sorry to hear you are feeling rotten - sounds like you might have an infection which is causing you to feel so poorly. I had chemo with radiation. Cisplatin is apparently designed to work with radiation - enhances the effectiveness of radiation. I'm sure there are a number of people here who can advise you as to chemo alone, but I am not familiar with it. Hang in there - you WILL feel better.

Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 8,311 | I was told the same thing that if I did the chemo thing it would enhance the radiations' kill rate by appx 30%. That the chemo (Cisplatin) wouldn't kill the cancer by itself. There are other chemos out there that others have had so maybe their different in their killing abilities.
