Today is 2 years since I finished radiotherapy, and yesterday I got the results of my first PET-CT scan...all clear! The ENT doesn't know why my parotid is enlarged (the radio should have shrunk it). I can have it surgically removed, but it's in the radio area, making it awkward. I don't think I'll bother, just keep taking the occasional painkiller.
Cheers!

How are the root canals doing? I keep procastinating calling my dentist to get my teeth capped because I'm afraid he may have to do two root canals to do it.
Take care, Eileen

I've only had the one root canal done (effing expensive!). Took 3 or 4 visits - I have weird teeth and roots - and it still hurts a bit, but then again is that perhaps from the others going out in sympathy? And my dentist asks me why I don't like seeing him...dentists, I'm sure are sadists (sorry Jerry).
All I can say is good luck Eileen, and when I have more moolah I'll visit my sadist again, (lie back and think of England as they said in old Pommy movies)....
Cheers!

Seriously, I know we dentists get a bad rap and unfortunately, as in any field or profession, there are some bad apples. People always "talk" about their bad experiences and that's why I always tell my patients to spread the word, eg that the root canal DIDN'T hurt and get us some good publicity.
And Eileen, as you know I'm just across the river...let me prove to you that I speak the truth.

I had a "bad" dentist as a child, he had his assistant and my dad pry my mouth open to pull a tooth so I wouldn't need braces later.
I was afraid of dentists until I married and my husband's best friend from grade school on was our dentist. He was the most compassionate and caring man, and died too young from liver cancer. He was treated at MD Anderson. My dental check ups always included lots of hugs.
The gentleman who bought his practice is the one I credit with saving my life. He walked me over to the oral surgeon who got me in immediately and did my biopsy by putting me first on a busy surgery day and having his entire staff come in early to take care of me. Early detection from competent, caring people like yourself enabled me to have a new normal that isn't as tough as others have been. Retire to Florida, would you please?
Fondly, Lisa

This guy is really gentle and everyone loves him. He sends people elsewhere to get the root canals, which I'm praying I'm will not need. There is nothing wrong with the roots, it is just my teeth are so small, he is afraid he will have to get to close to the nerve.
Jerry, Thanks for the offer. I'm hoping I don't need it. I'm certain all your patients love you. I've never understood people's fear of dentists. I've mostly gotten good care.
Well let's get off this subject and back to congratulating Tizz on her all clear.

Let's move on. Please do not forget that we need the dental community to change the paradigm of early detection which is not currently taking place.

It's great to hear your warm fuzzy stories about dentists. Does my heart good. I've read so many negative stories here. No plans to retire to Florida as I love skiing too much and my kids and grandkids live in NJ.
Eileen,
Hope things continue to go well with your dental treatment. People's fears of dentists usually come from a previous bad experience. Hard for someone to understand that never had one. You are lucky. BTW got off an email to try to get train info for you for the NYC walkathon.
Meredith,
Many years ago we switched from x-mas cards to Thanksgiving cards. Out entire front desk area gets plastered with with cards and it gives us a jump start on the holiday season.
Good luck on the colonoscopy.
Had some good news myself this week. Had my first annual chest x-ray and all was clear. Today is the first anniversary of my biopsy. Hard to believe.
Jerry
PS Meredith - - The first trip my wife and I are planning after retirement (about 4 years) will be to Australia. Hope we can hook up.

Be consoled, I really do like my dentist and previous ones, it's just the procedure. My current one appreciates any info I have imparted to him, and the print-out of you and Brian in the newspaper. Must be great living in OZ. Retirement looks so far off, but time flies so quickly and I marvel at how fast my grandkids are growing up.
Perhaps as I get closer to retirement I might feel more comfortable taking off for a 3 week vacation and can get there sooner. We would like to get to New Zealand too, so I think we'll need 3 weeks. How's the weather in July and August? With my wife being a teacher, that is the only time of year that we can get a long vacation in.
