To go back to the original question - yes, mouthwashes and medications containing alcohol, such as Nyquil, should be avoided. If fact I have read guidelines, from Hopkins I believe, even suggesting that drinking beverages too hot or too cold can also have a mutagenic effect. Anything that can irritate the squamous cells in the throat is suspect.

It still makes me wonder with all the billions of people that smoke and all the billions that drink and all the billions that drink and smoke and all the billions that are exposed to HPV why are we so lucky. What is it within us or what makes us take the same ingredients and have it turn into Oral Cancer? Is it our genetic makeup, an extra chromosome, a missing one? I just want to think that we all share some common "thing" that makes this make sense.

So why do we still see Dentists and other promoting some of these products? Seems to me that 30 seconds 3-5 times a day would do as much or more damage than a casual drinker.

Kevin,
ignorance comes to mind and the fact that they are given those huge bottles for promotional purposes. My dentist has a 1/2 gallon sized dispenser of alcohol containing mouthwash in his restroom.

David - only 10% of people who drink abuse alcohol so that must be factored in.

Immune system integrity as well as environmental factors must be considered as well - many, many variables! Then, as you well know, add HPV to the mix.

Smoking is still considered the leading cause of preventable death.

My H&N surgeon told me it was all a matter of "luck"...

The cruel irony: you are a unique individual, just like everybody else. (you're the same but not the same)

You have to consider volume of exposure and duration. Couple that with individual genetic predispositions. If someone quits using Nyquil on the few days of the year they have the flu, I don't think that they are avoiding anything...they are only dealing with symptomology of influenza that they wouldn't have to deal with if they used it.
