Sherrie, your daughter has a great teaching opportunity and hopefully the kids will learn something! So many people just don't realize what the deal is. When I saw my dentist recently and told him about my son's cancer, the first thing he asked was "Does he smoke?" - and he looked surprised when I told him his age and that - No, he did not smoke.

I have many pictures of Heather showing not only the surgery, but the major swelling she had. I have ones of when her tongue was swollen and protruding 2" through her locked jaw, really gross. And others.
Depending on how soon she would need them, I would be glad to email or mail them to you. I could post them on my web page for you to see and choose which ones she would want. I would just need a little time to get them posted. I could also upload them to a site like Snapfish.
Since Heather didn't survive, her pictures may hit home a little harder. Especially if she first shows the "before", with her as an attractive young woman, then shows the "after" ones. Let me know if she wants them.
Tell her to take heart. If she does a good job presenting her report, it will shut the kids up. I did a report in 12th grade about Margaret Sanger, an early birth control advocate. Had to talk about early forms of condoms and stuff. Embarrassed the heck out of me, and got lots of remarks from the kids, but getting an A helped to shut them up.
Was primary caregiver to my daughter Heather who had stage IV base of tongue SCC w/ primary recurrence. Original diagnosis August 21st, 2002. Primary recurrence March 18th, 2003. Died October 6th, 2003.

You have a great kid there, she will do fine and yes have her use some pictures. Then have her pass out treats and after the brats eat them tell them she injected cancer cells into the treats! Just kidding..... Would like to see their faces though!

With the passion of someone living with it, watching her dad she will deliver a message that no grown up could ever do. She may even save one or tow of those kids in the futer with her repot. so you tell her GO GIRL!!!

And as for the list of "don'ts", yes I'm sure it looks depressing when you're young. Everything mom is telling you is backed up by cancer research!
Sherrie, I hope your daughter teaches them a thing or two about oral cancer and someone (maybe a teacher) teaches them a thing or two about compassion and not saying hurtful things! Some of it is just their age I guess but still there is no real excuse.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 5,260 | Young ones only remember and learn from what we teach them. There will always be young ones that don't have the proper home teaching. I hope your daughter got or will get an extra grade for this.
Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.
