The hospice Rob was in offer a whole package of complementary therapies and one of those is PAT dogs. These dogs are brought in by their volunteer owners and walked around the hospital from bed to bed stopping and standing for anyone who wants to stroke and pet them.
Brilliant idea!!

I should do that with Martini. I have friends that have two therapy dogs, they are nice calm dogs. I could try doing it with Casey, she scares people sometimes because she is a "talker/yodeler"...kind of like "Wooohooowhoo" when she sees people. I thinks it's fuuny but I have seen people stop dead in their tracks when she does this.

Staining around the eyes is always a problem with Bichons. I start out by careful grooming around the eyes by scissor cutting. "Wonderfluff" shampoo works the best for white dogs. http://www.dog.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=190938+116+FLE&Cat=

Some Bichons have allergies that make the tear staining problem worse but most of the time it's just a gromming issue.

I'm a dog groomer & have worked in a pet shop since i was 14! I have a staffordshire bull terrier & she's been my life line getting through treatment. My company through the day while my partner was working. & whenever i felt down she knew it was time to play ball to break my mood! Took some time to stop her leaping on me with my RIG tube though!
When i groom Bichons, westies or other white coated dogs, I usually cut the tear stain down and use a good remover. Regular application of petroleum jelly can prevent it coming back.

Undifferentiated Nasopharyngeal Ca. T3N1M0 stage: IIb. diagnosed: June 2006. 6cycles of high dose chemo (Cisplatin & 5FU). 6 & half weeks (33sessions) radical R/T

I made a big mistake when i went to the hospice to see Robins tree.I never even thought about it because i take Amber every where with me ,and when i turned in too the hospice car park she started hurling herself against the windows and wagging her tail.It broke my heart, how the hell do you explain to a dog? I dont even understand.

John's little "Scooter" still waits at the front door every day around 4:30 for John to come home. Altho he now sleeps with me, I know I am "second choice". Amy in the Oz

Cookey, my heart is so with you right now. I'm sorry you lost Robin but I'm happy that you're handling it so well. I'm also pleased to hear that you have a Jack......lucky you! Our Lucy is due to become a mother on Sept. 4th and it's turning into a real family event. My girls insist that we have a "wedding" for her and Leo and now they're teasing me about having a baby shower. A little overboard I think.

Take care and I'm thinking of you and Rob.
Love,
Minnie

Just be patient - feed the dog long enough and you will be the first choice - I guarantee it.
