I have started to take Methadone to fight very bad pain during my radiation treatment. I reached the highest level about a week after the last radiation treatment, on Nov 23rd, 2006. At that time I took 136 mg per day

Abraham,
Welcome, and Happy New Year.

Listen to your Doctor. If you need pain meds, you need them, period. They (the Doctors at cancer care facilities) wean cancer patients off of addictive medications for pain every single day. They know what they're doing, and they're good at it. Do as they tell you when it's time to start weaning. They will not let you suffer, nor be overly uncomfortable.

Let us know how you're making out

When I was in treatment the first time, I was on Morphine, when I quit I had withdrawal symptoms for about three days and then all was well. Don't be afraid of permanent addiction.

Everyone that has been through these kinds of treatments has been on heavy-duty pain killers/opiates. Every one of us has been weaned off of them without any lingering addictions. I was on strong stuff for almost a year after treatments ended, and I needed it. Put this concern/fear of all this behind you and use the medications that are available to be comfortable now. There is no need or rational for suffering discomfort as you go through this process. Your doctors deal with this everyday. Let them help you make good decisions, they know a lot more about it than you do.

Hi Abe,

I was on morphine, oxycontin, phentynol (sp)all at the same time. I had no withdrawal symtoms whatsoever. It was nice to not be in a fog again. I'm sure you will be able avoid addiction without too much problem.

SCC, base of tongue, 2 lymph nodes, stage 3/4. 35 X's IMRT radiation, chemo: Cisplatin x 2, 5FU x2, & Taxol x2. Hooray, after 3 years I'm in still in remission.
