Hi, I have had ulcer in my mouth (Left Cheek) for about a year it has never been painful so i just ignored it.A friend told me i should get it checked out.I saw a consultant who did an urgent biopsy. They found abnormal cells so they are going to laser the whole thing out to get to the cherry as he puts it.It will be done within 4 weeks. Then i have to wait a further 2 weeks for the biopsy results.Could waiting make it worse.Since the first biopsy it has been uncomfortable. The stitches didnt even dissolve they had to take them out.I also have an ear ache.I know that the biopsy will have the answers. But all this waiting is awful as i really dont understand.I never heard of mouth cancer until i saw my consultant.

Hi Kaffer welcome to the OCF,
Is that Hampshire UK.I guess it will be beause you used the word Consultant.
where abouts in Hampshire, and which hospital.
We were at the The Royal Surrey, and St Lukes Cancer Centre in Guildford

Like you Rob and i were ignorant about Oral Cancer, though we soon caught up.
Like us also you are going to get held up by christmas and new year holidays which delay all the results of tests and biopsies, and is a pain in the bum

Use this site wisely and you will get all the help and information you could need, although over reading on the internet can be counterproductive sometimes ,so it might be easier just to sit tight till our friends from the USA are up and about and i am sure you will get loads of help and reassurance.

regards liz

If it is abnormal cells and they are going to laser it, waiting is unlikely to make it worse.
My first biopsy through till the first laser surgery was a couple of months,
Oh I had to take my stitches out also, they just never dissolved and tickled the back of my throat.
Hope that this makes the waiting a bit easier.
Sunshine.. love and hugs

Hi Kaffer, and welcome to OCF from your friends on the 'other side of the pond'!

Sorry I have no great words of wisdom for you, but I do hope it helps to know that you're among friends here, and can ask any and all questions you may have.

Before joining OCF, I was ignorant of healthcare procedures in other countries. Obviously, there are pros and cons regarding 'free' vs. 'insurance' programs.

I'm sorry you'll have to wait so long for further treatment and results. I agree with Helen in that it is my non-professional opinion that 'abnormal' cells do not necessarily constitute a medical emergency. If you can, try to enjoy your holidays, think positively, and just know that 2008 will bring the results.

We're all in this together. DO let us know of any changes.

Thankyou all of you for your replies. You are all very kind. In front of my husband & grown daughters i say im not worried everything will be ok.But inside im always thinking.I spoke to my doctor about helping me to give up smoking but she said that i should not try to yet, until i get the next biopsy results as the stress could be to much as giving up is very hard.Have you ever heard of this before.Thankyou all once again. Rob tried to give up and actually managed for three weeks, but the doctors said the same to him, they felt that it was better to cope with one thing at a time.
