Hello all,

I am brand new to this forum and thought I would ask a couple of questions.

About 2 weeks ago, I noticed that a small place on the right side of my tongue felt numb, I looked and didnt see anything so just passed it off as nothing. Within the last week or so I noticed a small growth in this same area, it looks like what is commonly referred to as a "skin tag". Also with the last few days I have noticed that a small area on the left side of the roof of my mouth has the same sensation as my tongue does, I had my wife look at the roof of my mouth and she said I had the same "skin tag" type growths there to, plus red spots on the far right side of my mouth on the cheek. Now I will admit that my oral hygeine is not the absolute best in the world and was wondering if this could be the cause or could it be something that I need to consult with my doctor or dentist about. BTW, which is better for this type of issue, a doctor or dentist?
I cannot afford to nor do I want to be an alarmist and run to the doctor or dentist when it isnt necessary, I do however want to have them checked out if its warranted...that is where your thoughts on the subject will come in handy...

Thanks,

KelleyW

Hi Kelley,
If money is an issue, I would go directly to an ENT or head & neck surgeon as too many of us here have had unsatisfactory diagnosis from a dentist, family doctor or even (in my case) oral surgeon. The oral cavity is a highly complex area and requires a specialist. If you have access to a comprehenive cancer center in your area, all the better.

If you do have oral cancer then time is of the essence. It will not get better with time only worse. You obviously have some serious concerns or wouldn't have sought out this site.

Hi Kelly,

There are lots of things that aren't as serious as cancer that you might be seeing. Most of us probably don't spend much time peering into our mouths, so when we do we see all kinds of trouble.

Gary is right you should have those things checked out. While you are at it why not make the committment to better hygiene as well.
