Hi there. My name is Dave, I am scheduled for jaw bone replacement at toronto general hosp. I have had my pre-op but as yet have no surgery date. Does anyone have any insight as to how long it takes on average to get in to get it done? Thanks, David L.

Welcome to OCF, Dave. Im in the US and our medical system works differently here than in Canada. We do have many members from Canada on the forum.

If you have been waiting for a long time to get your surgery, call the doctors office and ask them if they have a date yet. If no, then your next question should be is there anything that is holding this up. Its common for patients and caregivers to advocate for themselves in order to get things accomplished.

Its a big surgery! Ive had it done. Wishing you all the very best with everything!

Thank you Christine. I am already encouraged by this forum. I had throat cancer 4 yrs. ago. 35 radiation treatments, 2 chemo. I am cancer free as many of you are. this recent problem with my jaw has been coming for a while now. I finally broke it about 2 months ago. Thank you for responding, I and my wife are doing very well. she is a uterus cancer survivor. we are doing pretty much all the things we looked forward to when planning our retirement, so we consider ourselves blessed.

Hi Dave,

My husband has had different procedures done at different departments at TGH, though not surgery. I would suggest you call your surgeon's office to find out the date, or you could call Patient Appointments (you might have to go through the Main Switchboard, but tell them you want to check your appointments) to find out if it has been scheduled. Good luck.

thank you for the reply. I have talked to tgh several times but they say they cannot give me a time yet. they say maybe April. we hope so. the problem seems to be all the emergency surgeries and the shortage of operating theatres. I guess I will just have to be patient. They are managing my pain for now so I am thankful for that. Thanks, Dave.

Dave, is it osteradionecrosis? Thats the when jaw bone deteriorating and dying from the radiation treatments? Unfortunately this happens with OC survivors who have had rads.

Im very glad to hear you are doing well after having OC 4 years ago. Glad to hear it was successfully treated and you are doing well.
