Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 6 | Sorry I didn't do this first. I'm Heather and I'm a 45yr old non-smoker who has a lump around 1cm on my inner bottom lip. It is soft and skin coloured/pink with no ulceration. I am having it biopsied this Friday and am scared. The oral surgeon said it didn't belong there but when I asked him it he thought it was bad he said "he would be surprised if it was" which I take as a good sign.
I'll try and work out a signature but not too good at IT stuff.

Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 3,267 Likes: 1 | Welcome, Heather. So far, so good, and it's not cancer until proven by biopsy, which may not change the typical wait and worry until then, but try to keep busy, which may help keep your mind from worrying too much.

12/13 taste gone, dry mouth,
02/14 hair slowly returning
05/14 taste the same, dry sinuses, irrigation helps.
01/15 food taste about 60% returned, dry sinuses are worse in winter.
12/20 no more sinus problems, taste pretty good

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Try to realize that you have done all you can at this moment; and then direct your thoughts to some completely different topic that would ordinarily occupy them if you weren't concerned about the lump.
It could well be benign, but since the usual human tendency is to focus on the worst possible outcome, thoughts usually go in that direction if you give them a chance. Since they are your thoughts, take charge and direct them away.
If you do this, and you can, you will save yourself a lot of un-necessary and un-helpful mental anguish.
I've read that the Chinese ideogram for "Danger" is the same as for "Opportunity." Use this to your advantage; when you need a place to direct your unbidden negative thoughts, use this opportunity to direct them to taking an inventory of those things that you love and/or enjoy in life.
Be aware that life only exists in the moment. The previous moments are all gone, never to be repeated, and the next moment is uncertain. People drop dead for no apparent reason all the time, and none of them expected it. So, this moment is the most precious in your life because you HAVE it. DO NOT miss this fact, or you will be missing life when you need it most.

7/8/13 - Emergency Surgery/Blood vessel burst in throat
8/9/13 - Peg in
9/3/13 - Radiation starts 30 IMRT, 60gy BOT, 56gy both sides of neck
10/14/13 - Radiation ended!
11/12/13 - PEG out!

48 yo female, quit smoking 4yrs ago, light drinker, Stage 2 SCC, Bx3, Dx 8/22/13, surgery 9/11/13. Partial glossectomy, bilateral neck dissection levels 1-4. Tongue reconstruction with flap from forearm. 87 Lymph nodes CLEAR. Tongue margins good at 1 cm. No further treatment planned. Monthly monitoring planned for upcoming year then periodic monitoring for next 4
