Joined: Jun 2013 Posts: 262 | Thank you all for the kind wishes. I've made it through two rads and one big bag of Cisplatin. The chemo has me reeling, sick since Tuesday evening despite being on 5 anti-nausea meds round the clock. Called the nurse this morning to ask if there's anything else we can do. Had hoped to be at work yesterday and today, but guess that wasn't realistic.
On the plus side my anxiety is definitely down now that treatment's underway. I know there's rough times ahead but now everyday I'm closer to recovery.

Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 214 Likes: 1 | Don't feel bad,(kind of an out of place cliche) cisplatin did a number on me too. I could not work, nor could I drive until Friday. Weeks 2 and 3 aren't bad. The second cisplatin is when things get a little rough. Hang in there you have just begun.

Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 3,267 Likes: 1 | Not all places may do, but to avoid food, smell, and taste aversions, even thought of treatment can create aversions, which can cause nausea, vomiting even entering the room. To help prevent this they may give or tell you to drink something strong, not alcohol lol, or use strong candy before chemo, radiation, and after your last meal before Tx, so you do not relate that the two. I think it's called, "Scapegoat Techniue" You can ask about that, google it, which can explain better than me. Feel better.

Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 1,291 Likes: 1 | FYI - Tip on ginger. You can just thinly slice the fresh ginger root and steep in hot water. No need to grate then have to strain as well as an extra utensil to wash.
If you really want to get all the extraction then cut a bit thicker slice and use one of those meat tenderizer mallets using the sharp pokey side. One mash and the ginger is broken down yet remains intact.
You can take a clove of garlic and mash it with the same effect.

Do you know if they boil garlic to get the skin off in large batches? I see big containers of whole peeled garlic, which can be peeled, but that's a lot peeling, and like to keep mine whole for certain uses.

The docs call it "ringing in the ears" but I never heard ringing but more like a really faint buzzing and not at all constant. I didn't advise my MO until after the 3rd Cis and by then I had unrepairable damage. What galls me to this day is only after me telling my MO about the buzzing sound did he quickly say "I wish you had told me sooner. I would have switched you to Carboplatin which is just as effective as Cis but without the nasty side effects."

Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

I had some low-level tinnitus at baseline so it's a matter of degrees. I see my MO Monday and will discuss it. I don't think he sees Cisplatin and Carboplatin as equally proven. If your MO did, why do you think he didn't put you on Carbo in the first place?

Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 8,311 | This was 7 years ago and at that time no study had been done comparing the 2 but Moffitt's belief was they were equal but that Cisplatin was their number 1 choice (the Gold Standard) unless you had pre existing hearing conditions or until you heard the ringing. This was also before it was known I was HPV+ because not only did I have to go thru the entire Tx but I had to research the HPV connection, find Dr Maura Gillison at Johns Hopkins, call her and get her to agree to test my slides, get Moffitt to send them to her and wait a month for the results. Even though I am still convinced I was waaayyy better off choosing Moffitt for my treatment I still had issues with them.
