I am really hoping others here may have had similar experiences and can reassure me. My whole life I've had a sensitive mouth, with breakouts from foods/minor trauma etc. About mid-April, I noticed a small sore (white, kind of rough to my tongue, not terribly sore) at the base of my left lower canine tooth. Went to dentist when it didn't heal after 3 weeks. He scheduled a biopsy for 2 weeks later and in the meantime, told me to use hydrogen peroxide on the lesion. I did that and the area completely healed- there was nothing to biopsy, no roughness, no redness, nothing. About a week later, I developed an ulcer in the same spot. This time, we biopsied right away (awaiting results). In the meantime (2 days later), it looks like I am developing another ulcer at the base of an adjacent tooth. This is freaking me out completely. What could cause this? I don't have any lymph nodes or sore throat.

There are many causes for mouth ulcers, including the ones you mentioned, in addition too, a bacterial, fungal or viral infection, neutropenic, anemia ulcers, other medical conditions, rubbing on a tooth, biting tongue while sleeping, rough or sharp foods, spices, medications, smoking, drinking alcohol. Glad you went to the doctor, any sore or anything unusual, not going away in two weeks should be checked out like you did. I would also suggest changing your toothbrush, as not to reinfect yourself if it is an infection. Most times it's something else other than cancer. Maybe also have a blood work up to see if anything is out of range or shows deficiency. Good luck with the biopsy.

Since you have had "life long" oral problems perhaps an allergy should be ruled out.

Again, thanks for your thoughts. I've thought of that and I'd love it to be allergic. I see my internist next week and will be following up on all suggestions. I think I have 2 real issues. First, I'm not sure I would have paid any attention to the first lesion if it hadn't been right where my tongue rests. I worry that I didn't notice it soon enough. I've been too cavalier about my mouth. Second, both my dad and brother are dentists, so I worry because of what I know from them.

Most probably biopsy will follow, unless malignancy can be ruled out right away which I doubt.

It's good you are diligent Lou-ann - better to be safe than sorry. Hopefully it is nothing. Some people are diagnosed with lichen planus ( which can also resemble an allergy to the amalgam in tooth repairs, implants etc... ) There is some connection to stress where lichen planus is concerned even though they have no idea what causes it. It could very well be this. Regardless I do hope your biopsy is an all clear. Best of luck

My biopsy came back and, lucky for me, was not malignant. It was a Pyogenic granuloma, which is a proliferation of blood vessels in response to an injury. The second "ulcer" was the beginnings of a "satellite granuloma".They are most common in but not exclusive to pregnancy. LOL, I am 52! Very weird.
