During treatment my husband refrained from using a sauna. We are at a hotel tonight and wondering if it is ok to use a sauna 2 months post treatment. Don't know if it would be benefical for problems he is having with lymphedemia? Or would it be harmful. We have one it our home and uncertain about continuing its use. Is cold or heat bad on one's neck when there is the fluid build-up from the neck disection?

Husband diagnosed Oct '11 Cancer of the vocal cord Nov '11 removed right vocal cord. Neck Dissection, cancer in one node, .2, very small & contained) Jan '12 Radiation and Cisplatin, 6 doses. June '12 & Dec '12 clear Pet scan. April '13 Celebrating 1 year cancer free since treatment ended.

This is just my personal experience. I have not researched it at all. I found the sauna at my Gym and the steam room to be wonderful in stretching and relaxing the neck scars from my neck dissection. The heat helped me do the physical therapy exercises (I went in the day time when it was empty so nobody was there except me doing my PT). I started one month after my ND and told my physical therapist and my doctors and nobody said not to. But if you are worried, it cannot hurt to ask your doctors or therapist. I would not overdo it, my sessions were short but they felt great to me. I also did the lymphoma massages recommended to me.

If he's on a fentanyl patch, no it's not OK and would be deadly. Transdermal delivery systems for medications like fentanyl or Androderm etc are heat activated and will release medications as they heat up. If he's not on a transdermal, I've never heard of any other complications.

Hope it helps!

Eric
