I'm 26 years old and am about 6 weeks pregnant. About 3 weeks into my pregnancy I developed a rough light red patch on my right cheek. Went to the dentist and he referred me to an oral surgeon. The oral surgeon dismissed it and said he could barley see it. I wasn't too happy with that assessment so I got a 2nd opinion. The next oral surgeon was much more thorough but also said it was nothing serious and he said absolutely no cancer. But told me to come back 2 weeks into my 2nd trimester if it's still there he would do a biopsy. I was relieved but the spot has been there for a month. I really would like an objective test instead of these subjective opinions. Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 7 | With the sore being there for a month I would suggest finding either another oral surgeon who will do the biopsy or request it from your current one. Any sore that has been in your mouth for over 2 weeks should be checked out by a professional. It could be all kinds of things besides cancer but only thru a biopsy will you know for sure. You can also get checked by an ENT who sees oral cancer patients, they can biopsy too.
Hope it turns out to be nothing serious!

Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Joined: May 2012 Posts: 5 | Does the biopsy require an anesthetic? The first oral surgeon mentioned that he wouldn't even do one unless I was in my 2nd trimester.. Which puts me to the end of June. I really don't want to wait that long. I'm not suggesting that you "give up" in your quest to get your answers so as Christine said above you can always seek another opinion.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 7 | Biopsies can be done either by putting the patient to sleep, by local anesthetic or without anything. It really depends on the patient and where the sore is located. Ive had a few done without anything and it was no big deal, those were located on my gums.

Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,844 | I'm not a Dr, but I play one on the internet sometimes just to mess with people As Christine has pointed out, biopsies are really not a big deal and I would insist upon it if only for peace of mind. Being pregnant undue stress and worry isn't good for you or your baby, that being said, you've gone to 2 different Oral Surgeons who've told you it's nothing. If you are still not satisfied (and apparently you are not) then insist upon a biopsy. I will say this, my wife was very "sensitive" while pregnant with both of our boys, while I encourage precaution I also think it could be emotions due to hormones. Remember that these medical professionals can be held liable if they miss something like cancer and you've had two "oral surgeons" check you out and dismiss it. It could be a number of things going on in your mouth and not necessarily cancer, keep an eye on it but really don't let it stress you out. If you can't get your head wrapped around it, get an appointment with an Ear Nose and Throat surgeon. Keep your chin up! Eric

Joined: May 2012 Posts: 5 | Thank you for all of your advice, I really appreciate it. Both of the oral surgeons said it was probably related to my hormones.. But i still want to know for sure. My oral surgeon is great- I called him and said I was really stressed about it and he got me in tomorrow afternoon for a biopsy.
