Joined: Feb 2012 Posts: 38 | Before cancer chemo/rad, I suffered herpes simplex outbreaks on my chin about twice a year.
Radiation was in chin area.
Four years after TX, I still have not had an outbreak.
Just wondering, anyone else notice a seeming cure for any annoying ailment that disappeared after TX ?

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 7 | I had arthritis in my lower back prior to having cancer. When I went thru HBO, it cured my arthritis. Maybe losing over a third of my body weight helped too. Now a few years later the arthritis is slowly coming back. At least I had about 3 years of relief.

Joined: Feb 2012 Posts: 38 | Arthritus is a difficult ailment to overcome, devistating the immune system gives your body a period of relief from it, if only researchers could use the info to develop treatment for it.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 7 | Hyperbaric Oxygen treatments worked on my arthritis. They can be monotonous to go thru but it was worth it. They really worked wonders for me.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 7 | No idea. Just know my family doc did several tests years ago and said I have arthritis in my lower back. He said it showed on the xrays. This was about 2005, before I got sick. My memory is now not very good so the details are sketchy. I just know when I did HBO in 2008, my back got better. Now its not even half as bad as it was before so I dont worry about it.

I don't have experience with this happening in OC but do with HIV and hepatitis. The mechanism might be similar.
In HIV, the immune system has been seriously damaged by the HIV (for us it's the chemo and maybe the cancer too) and the symptoms of hepatitis don't appear. When the immune system recovers through drug treatment, the signs of hepatitis come back. The doctors call this Immune Reconstitution Syndrome.
The way I see it is this(and this is the world according to KLo so not necessarily medically correct): the immune system prioritises and shelves one disease for later when it is strong enough to fight on two fronts. Once the immune system has recovered a bit, it goes after the second disease. It is the battle between the disease and our own body that we see and feel and call symptoms.
As an aside to the arthritis observations: My friend who underwent chemo for another type of cancer, told me last week that her doctor told her that post cancer and chemo, the immune system is permanently altered and immune mediated diseases (like arthritis) might appear. I find it fascinating that HBO might help - have to tell Alex that ...

Joined: Jul 2009 Posts: 1,406 | Paul, compared to some of these other posters my comment is minimal, but I do notice that the canker sores that used to plague me all my life are almost completely a thing of the past after radiation. But that also may be due to Biotene toothpaste.
