Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 225 | Does anyone see a flash of light during IMRT radiation. My brother says that a particular (the same each time) of his RX, he sees a flash of light. At another time he smells what he describes as ozone. Has anyone else had similar experiences. Should he be worried about his eyes?
Brother 49yo DX 22/6/11 Tonsil SCC HPV+ Stage IV T4N1(?)M0. Carbo/docetaxel (Taxotere)19/7, 11/8 (with E-tux), 1/9; E-tux 11/8, 25/8, 15/9, 30/9, 14/10, 28/10; IMRT X 35 (70gy tumour;63gy nodes;56gy gen area) 19/9-4/11/11. Clear PET scan 1/2/12. 1 and 2 year post treatment checks good.

Joined: Jul 2009 Posts: 1,406 | I was told - if I'm remembering it correctly (this is not a given) - that the flashes were in fact artifacts of the human eye and not actual bursts of light in the room. I do remember finding this amazing at the time. That said, I always kept my eyes closed. It was scary enough!

Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 618 | I had the light flashes. They where blue for me. I asked about it and the technitions said a few people see them on occasion. must be a wierd hit on the optical nerve at times or something like that.
I almost always had my eyes closed.

It caters for all cancers but this is on the "Mouth, Nose & Throat Cancer Support Group" . Here is the what I read and I have PM�d samkl the full text.
�Despite the best efforts by the RadOnc planners to avoid essential organs, as previously posted some of my RT beams caused a blue flash so I knew that my eyesight was being impacted, however, now hopefully I'm cancer free.�
He did go on to say however he was not sure if his eyesight problem was caused by RT or HBO.
History Leukoplakia bx 8/2006 SCC floor mouth T3N0M0- Verrucous Carcinoma.
14 hour 0p SCC-Right ND/excision/marginal mandibulectomy 9/2006, 4 teeth removed, flap from wrist, trach-ng 6 days- no chemo/rad.
6 ops and debulking (flap/tongue join) + bx's 2006-2012.
bx Jan 2012 Hyperkeratosis-Epithelial Dysplasia
24cm GIST tumour removed 8/2013. Indefinite Oral Chemo.
1/31/16 passed away peacefully surrounded by family

Joined: Jul 2009 Posts: 1,406 | Hmm... it never even occurred to me that the flashes I saw so briefly during IMRT might be damaging to my eyesight, nor was this mentioned by anyone. And my RT was great about telling me everything that might go wrong. But here I am 2 1/2 years out and I note no changes to my vision beyond what I'd normally expect.

Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,606 Likes: 2 | Lucky me I saw the light flashes and had the same smell almost like bleach until the last few days and it changed to a flesh burning smell. 8 years after treatment (okay tomorrow will be) I just found out a month ago that my eye prescription has changed for the first time in about 20 years. Ironically, they made my glasses weaker because my vision has improved. I knew I would eventually find something that was better before treatment!

"The flashes were probably Cherenkov radiation from electrons that were scattered by the X-ray/Gamma ray photons (Compton Scattering). The electrons are moving at a speed greater than the speed of light in the aqueous humor of the eyeball. "

A later medical report comparing it to Apollo 16 & 17 posits a different physical mechanism ,i.e. the retina itself rather than the vitreous humor. APOLLO LIGHT FLASH INVESTIGATIONS My own personal experience with over 40 IMRT treatments and 5 Cyberknife radiations was totally different.
