Expect lots more tests! I was diagnosed with SCC on the tongue too but I'm in AUstralia so protocols might be different.
You'll probably now have cat scans/MRI scans and possibly fine needle aspiration to determine whether it has spread to your lymph nodes. MY scans showed enlarged lymph nodes but they were unable to tell if they were malignant or not. In the end I had 1cm of tongue sliced off and a partial neck dissection (3 nodes and a benign tumor on a saliva gland. 8 days in hospital, fed through a tube for 5 days. Thankfully my nodes were clean so no further treatment is required at this stage. I hope you will be as lucky as me.

SCC right lateral tongue. Intially thought to be cell dysplasia and dx as SCC after surgical excision.
Nov 2010- partial glossectomy (1cm in width), partial neck dissection. Margins clear, nothing found in nodes- YAY! Benign tumor on saliva gland.
