The left lower side of my head always is dry and itches since the rads and chemo. I also have a scaly spot on the left side that seeps and forms a scab that gets thick and ocassionaly breaks off in pieces and comes loose . It will have about 15 strands of hair growing thru it. Anyone else have this problem? The constant itch is terrible to put up with. I have asked the Drs what it could be and they have all said it isn't cancer. Could it be another life long after affect??

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

Jim

Sounds a lot like "seborrheic dermatitis" which is a fancy medical term for itchy scalp with scale deposits. In infants, it is called "cradle cap" which sounds a lot nicer.
I had a very similar problem and what worked well was
Neutrogena's T-Gel therapeutic shampoo. It uses that old fashioned remedy my grandparents used: coal tar but unlike the standard coal tar shampoos it's really gentle.
It was so gross when my wife was cutting my hair (barbers are too expensive with my medical bills) and she would find that scab with the hairs in it that I asked my dermatologist. Since I have been using it, the problem of itchy scaly skin on my scalp has gone away. IMO, it's worth a try

Thanks again for good info Charm. I will get some tomorrow and I remember my Mother using that on her 8 as kids. It is long forgotten and I am glad you mentioned it to me. Almost like the Fels Naptha Soap and sugar for boils she used on us too. It wokred or at least put mind over matter . The boils always left .
