I spoke to a 3x breast cancer patient yesterday who is a lifelong friend of my aunt's. She told me that upon getting a cancer diagnosis it makes you automatically eligible for social security disability. She also said it takes hours and hours of paperwork but SS will go back for 1 year from the time you apply and give you retro. You must document and provide tons of info in order to qualify for this little known benefit. She is in her mid 50s and had to include info from her teenage years employment and phone number, address and medical history with every single doctor she ever had.

Christine-
A friends mom works for SS and kept pushing me to apply for ssdi for the same reason that once your diagnosed with cancer it's relatively easy to get as long as you show proof. I never intended to appy since I thought I'd be going back, I never thought the treatment was going to be so harsh on me. My boss had to let me go after holding my position for one year, I can't work a 12hr+ shift on my feet caring for cancer patients, I don't have the physical or emtoional strength right now. So I finally decided to apply and give it a try.

The paperwork was relatively easy for me since I already had copies of my medical record all I did was fill out some other forms on their website and did a phone interview. I did have to provide my last 10 years of employment but I have a list of all of those with detailed information and since I never got sick prior I had no medical history other than having my 3 girls, it was an easy case for them to decide I suppose.

SS does pay backpay to your diagnosis date minus 5months. So I was diagnosed March 2009, applied in April 2010, got approved in June 2010, got backpay for Sept 09-May 2010 and will start getting monthly payments this month.

I hope to not need it for too long and it's nice that they have a program that if I want to try to go back to work, they would do a "trail" for 9 months. I would still get paid while I tried to go back to work and if within those 9 months I decide I can go back they will stop payments or if it's something I can't handle yet then payments will continue.

I wonder how many of us are getting disability? I know for me, I would really have to find some other line of work, which would be fine but no where near the pay I was getting.

What a relief for you!
Congratulations,

Marlene

Marginal mandibulectomy 6/17/08 resulted in DX of Stage I SCC - gingiva (3 mm) right mandible, buccal side. Clear margins. Occasional social drinker. Smoked last cigarette in 1979. Clear pet: 12/08; 7/20/09. Yay!
