Like I do often I qualified that statement with "that I remember" and "but I'm sure there are some". Since I'm a Guy in Red now I am even more cautious about what I say or at least I try to be.

I haven't seen any statistics re starting with Carbo vs Cis but I'm reasonably confident that the overwhelming majority start with Cis.

I also wasn't posting a comment on chemo vs no chemo but since he has nodal involvement, again most would recommend concurrent chemo and I wouldn't compare the treatments of 1997 to what is practiced today. Hopefully they have gotten better! lol

I still stand by my comment/recommendation. If nothing else it's more logical to start with Cis with his tobacco history and switch if it causes a problem which is not a given to begin with but what is a given is that if they don't throw everything at his cancer now, certainly his recurrence chances increase.

One reason they might be wanting to radiate his parotid is because of the extracapsular spread(spread out side of the lymph node). I had stage 3 SCC on the right posterior third of my tongue, they took the whole right side, did a hemiglossectomy. They got clear margins, but they also pulled 40 lymph nodes and found 1 lymph node positive of cancer, but mine didn't have the extracapsular spread, so mine was all contained in the lymph node. But the cancer in my lymph node looked completely different then the cancer in my tongue, so now they are suspecting parotid involvement.
