In my experience, the workers that are downsized are usually middle management. I am not sure how big your company is, but it seems the senior management delegates some middle management assignments to secretaries, then have the departments take on more of the day to day operations themselves. The secretaries are key point people in between. I hope that helps.

I also worked as a secretary for 15 years for one organization and transferred into a different role by transferring within the same corporation to a different location. More money, more job satisfaction, and I am in Florida instead of Kansas! Never would have even attempted the change if I hadn't already survived cancer.
